+ Networking +Linotype: the Film Showing +Harper College graphic Arts Technology Students Benefit
What happens when you take avid industry professionals combined with Graphic Arts Technology students and a really engaging documentary about their industry? Genius. Passion. And really hot metal.
Join us as we marvel at the bulky, toilsome, once state-of-the-art machine that defined an industry for nearly a century. Linotype: The Film is a documentary centered around the Linotype type casting machine. Called the “Eighth Wonder of the World” by Thomas Edison, it revolutionized printing and society. The Linotype completely transformed the communication of information similarly to how the internet is now changing communication again. Today, very few machines are still in existence. The film tells the charming and emotional story of the people connected to the Linotype and how it impacted the world. Linotype: The Film is part of the retro revival movement in graphic design. As the digital age matures and devices start to replace print, artists and designers are looking back in time for inspiration and nostalgia. It’s not surprising that there is considerable interest in bringing the Linotype back into the spotlight and preserving its well-deserved legacy. The evening’s net proceeds will benefit the Harper Graphics Arts Scholarship Program. Your $50 donation gets you a pre-show social hour (appetizers and cash bar), a showing of Linotype: The Film, and the opportunity to help grow the future workforce. Printing Industries of America Chairman Tim Burton will speak on his journey in print and how his company has evolved. The Illinois Advisory Committee and the Great Lakes Graphics Association Board of Directors will also be recognized. It’s all happening on March 21 at The Medinah Shrine Center. Register right now before technology changes again! Recommended donation: $50 (additional donations are welcome) VALUE-ADDED SPECIAL: Attend both the Illinois Annual Meeting and Standard # 5 for $65!
